If you want to experience the Mayan Ruins there are many options open to you. The Ruins at Tulum are only about an hour away from Cancun and the spectacular Chichen Itza is about 3.5 hour away, both a more then worth the drive. Most tour companies will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel as well.
Isla Mujeres, an island just off Cancun also offers great shopping and beaches and is more then worth the time to visit. Long beach is renowned for its warm waters and gentle slope into the sea. Children are safe to play here since there is no surf and parents can watch their kids without their view obstructed.
